Finding Bargains on Home Improvement Products

February 7th, 2010

As with any renovation, these days you want to be able to obtain a quality product at a reasonable price. Sifting through all of the mass marketing that is done by the big chain stores (like Home Depot or Lowe’s) is part of the task of finding good products at a reasonable price, but also weeding through the countless online advertisements that will come your way when your looking for building products – is another task that you must face when looking for the best deals. With a little bit of guidance and by learning a few quick steps, you will be able to navigate your way through the maze of building products and onto the bargains that are out there.

The biggest misconception that you must over come is that you are always going to get the best deal at the big retail stores. Yes these stores are fine for certain building products like drywall or lumber, but they (the big chain stores) will lead you into the store with better pricing on these products and then while your there you buy other products at inflated prices. A good example of where you can save some money is on plumbing and lighting fixtures. You can easily save 20-35% on fixtures by simply doing a search online. Another example is RTA products such as RTA bathroom vanities or RTA kitchen cabinets. Online stores (the better online stores) will sell these type of cabinets and vanities at about thirty five (35%) less than a retail store. These big stores are there for your convience, you can get almost everything at one place, but unfortunately you will pay for this convenience. To sum it up, only buy certain items in the large home supply chain stores, buy your other products online or shop around and see what other deals are out there. It might take you a little more time, but you can literally save thousands of dollars. (I know we did when we bought our kitchen cabinets online, instead of from a retail store.)

So now that your on line and shopping for home improvement products — here are some quick tips that will help you save money and find quality products. Research and comparison shopping are going to be the two keys to finding a bargain. Say for example your buying light fixtures. Go to a few sites, compare prices, read about the company your buying from and then make a smarter decision. You should also consider EBay for certain building products. The site has millions of choices and some of them are very good deals. Again do some research and make an informed decision. You want to make sure that whoever you are buying from online, that they are a reputable company, have a physical address, and can provide customer service support in the event that something is wrong with the product.

You also want to be aware of what an advertisement is and what a true search is. If you’re doing a Google search, make sure you avoid the paid searches at the top and right side of the page, instead look at the “organic” searches that are right below the paid searches. These web sites are the real deal and are not paying to be there – instead these sites are here because they have the best product and the best prices. The paid searches are naturally going to charge you more, because they are paying to be there. So keep this in mind when you are looking for anything online.

As I mentioned before and a good way to summarize everything is to again make the point of doing research. If you find a good site online, then go to a comparable site and match pricing. See how prices compare and make sure the quality is the same. (I.e. Apples to Apples). If you do these things and keep all of this in mind you should be able to find some great deals and some quality too.

Spring Into the Season for Home Improvement

October 17th, 2009

If you’re like me, you’ve been sitting around the house all winter keeping a mental list of the home improvement projects you want to start. Now that spring is here, it’s time to get started. Not only will home improvements beautify your daily surroundings, they also add to the resale value of your home. So, there’s no time like the present to pull out a paintbrush or two and start making home improvements.

The easiest and least expensive way to dramatically improve both the exterior and the interior of a home is with paint. A fresh coat of paint breathes new life into a tired looking living room. Nothing says curb appeal like a gorgeous exterior color. To get things started, buy some masking tape, tarps, rollers, brushes, paint, spackle and sandpaper.

Touch up any cracks in the walls with the spackle and sandpaper, tape off your carpeting and sideboards, and get to painting. Remember to select a neutral shade that will suit a wide range of tastes if you intend to sell your home anytime in the near future.

Once the walls are gleaming and gorgeous with their new paint jobs, take a good look at your old lighting fixtures and hardware. Does the brown stained-glass chandelier in the kitchen look more like it belongs in the local pizzeria than in a high-end home magazine? Perhaps a trip to the hardware store is in order.

You can replace a light fixture and modernize a room for less than $100 and an hour of work. It will totally change the ambiance of the room. It can even change the atmosphere of the whole home if the fixture is in a highly visible spot. The same is true for hardware; changing doorknobs and drawer hardware can shave years off the appearance of your home.

Now that you’re seeing your home in a new light, so to speak, let’s give some attention to your cabinetry and countertops. Are they still looking like a country kitchen from the 1980s? Well, installing new cabinets is a lot of work and costs a pretty penny. What about paint or new hardware for the cabinets? It’s possible that painting them a dark gray and adding some glass panels will change their look entirely.

Try to improve your cabinets without breaking the budget. Then, use the money you save on your cabinets to renovate your countertops. Granite has dropped dramatically in price in recent years, and looks dynamite. Have professional installers give you an estimate on the cost for new countertops per square foot. If granite is still a bit out of your price range, laminate countertops are an affordable option that will make your kitchen shine again. Even putting tile over your old countertops is a viable option if you’re trying to keep your home improvements on a budget and renovate your kitchen on the cheap.

Spring is in the air, and it’s the perfect season to get started on home improvement projects. Plant some new shrubs, paint your bathrooms, change old light fixtures and add some spice to your kitchen. You’ll benefit from the beauty of your home improvements every day, and all of your hard work will ultimately add to the resale value of your home.

Home Improvement Magazines: an Endless Source of Home Improvement Ideas

September 24th, 2009

Home improvement magazines contain a plethora of house plan designs, renovation and decoration ideas for the kitchen, bedroom, living room, den and sun decks covering all types of houses and materials imaginable. There are so many, in fact, that the home improvement magazine industry has become a multi-million dollar business worldwide, catering to every home improvement and renovation niche.

There are magazines dedicated to do it yourself projects like kitchen cabinets, outside Jacuzzis, above ground pools, patios not only on their printed versions but on their online versions as well. The explosion of the World Wide Web gave added momentum to the publication of home improvement magazines because the web gave them even more exposure, globally and in real time.

More and more home improvement magazines are now publishing their issues on their websites including up to date tips and information on home appliances, materials, paints, wall papers, and other home improvement related products making it virtually impossible for the wife or DIY enthusiast to miss an issue.

Reading and browsing these magazines enable you and me to pick up ideas from various dependable sources, compare them and finally choose the better one or incorporate them in designing our own homes and the rooms within, especially the kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom and the living room.

Some sites even offer a virtual tour or a walk through of particular designs and models in order to get a first hand and realistic interpretation of how it would actually look like even before the first nail or screw is bought!

This innovation of the online version compared to the printed version is enough to inspire us to make necessary renovation changes in our homes and kitchens. You can even have real-time modification of changes you want from color, to material, to appliance placement and cabinet construction including effects of the various types of lighting fixtures.

Bringing your renovation ideas to reality however may be a pretty expensive option if you follow the home improvement magazine advice and techniques to the letter. What you see on screen and on the printed page look really good and beautiful because they do not have any financial constraints like you and me. However, with careful planning and judicious choice of materials, you can without a doubt duplicate that very striking cabinet on the page in time for your wife’s birthday!

Continue browsing and reading those home improvement magazines and pick out the styles you want; when the right time comes, you can then bring them to reality in your own home at considerably lesser cost and without jeopardizing your budget!
