When I bought my house nine years ago, my son was about to turn three and I reveled in the security of owning my slice of the American dream. Being a single mom was (and is!) both challenging and rewarding, but I knew that having a house to call my own was the best thing that ever happened to my son and me.

My house was ten years old when I bought it, and it was in excellent condition. Still, as time passed, a variety of issues cropped up. I think my way of handling (or not handling) home improvements is fairly typical for single women who own their own homes. Hopefully, my experiences will help you navigate the waters of home improvement. Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. You can go places with a good book and a toolbox. The Christmas of the year I moved in, my sister and brother-in-law gave me a toolbox filled with the basics: screwdrivers, wrenches, a hammer, nails, nuts and bolts, and so forth. They also gave me a book on basic home repairs. Their gift literally provided me with the tools I needed, but it also gave me confidence that I could tackle minor home improvement projects. My advice: invest in some tools and use a book or online sources to guide you through the routine maintenance that your house requires.

2. Ask for advice. As a single woman who is now 49 years old and has limited knowledge of more complex home improvement issues, I’m always afraid that I’ll be taken advantage by a repair company. When my air conditioner conked out on a 100-plus degree day, for example, I had no way of knowing if I really needed a new unit. I’ve learned to call on neighbors, family members, and friends – whose collective knowledge exceeds mine – to get their impressions. They’ve steered me in the right direction on a number of occasions.

3. Keep tabs on the neighbors. All of the houses in my immediate vicinity were built by the same builder at roughly the same time. Getting to know my neighbors and talking to them about home improvement has helped me get a sense of what to plan for. For example, two years ago I began to see that the houses around me were starting to get new roofs. Although I didn’t have a leaky roof, a few months ago I decided to re-roof. I wanted to be proactive so I didn’t get stuck with the expense of drywall repairs in addition to the cost of a new roof.

4. Ask for referrals, and then check them yourself. Through my neighbors’ referrals, I’ve been able to find a superb roofer, an impeccable exterior house painter, and a terrific tile guy. But I don’t just rely on their word. I always – repeat, always – check with my state’s contractor licensing board to verify their licenses and with the Better Business Bureau to check on past complaints. I get all estimates in writing, and ask for proof of insurance.

5. Don’t put your head in the sand. There has been more than one occasion when I’ve chosen not to deal with a home improvement issue, and I’ve always regretted it. I knew, for example, that the exterior of my fireplace had some dry rot. Unfortunately, by letting it go for so long it cost me much more than if I would have dealt with it immediately.

6. Make a list. This last bit of advice is basic, but critical. Start and keep a home improvement list. As a single mom, it’s all too easy to get caught up in the hectic pace of daily life and let routine home maintenance fall by the wayside. I divide my home improvement list into three sections: one for items that need attention in the next three months; one for home improvement projects for the coming year; and one that maps out what I want to accomplish with the house over the next five years. The short- and medium-term lists keep me motivated, while my long-term list helps me save the money needed for the big-ticket items.

When you are considering any kind of home improvement project one of the most important considerations is the cost of the products you are using. Even though they can be purchased virtually anywhere, as with anything the prices can vary greatly. Almost everything you will need can be found at your local Lowe’s or Home Depot but you should do some online comparisons to keep them all honest. Many times you will find better deals on the internet even with shipping costs.

When buying on the internet just be sure that the vendor you are considering purchasing from has a good reputation, if using eBay check their feedback and don’t buy from anyone with excessive negative feedback. The internet is a little like the old Wild West days, anyone can pretend to be something they are not on the internet, someone can be running an operation out of their bedroom and have an online storefront that looks like a multi-million dollar company. That is not to say that some of these people aren’t reputable, just do your research and be careful.

Quality home improvement products are of course absolutely essential when it comes down to the actual project. Make sure when you are purchasing your home improvement supplies and tools that they are what you want and not what the professional contractor or sales clerk is pushing you to buy. If he or she is pushing then it probably means there is a cheaper alternative, probably a few pages ahead of the one that you are looking at in their magazine or at their store.

Generally quality products are the most important component when it comes to home improvements as you can’t improve anything without buying something better than what you currently have, now can you? Exactly! So, when purchasing your home improvement supplies, whether they are from an internet website or a local crafts shop all you need to do is make sure that they are what you want and you feel that they will be improving your home! There is no point spending money on things that are not to your taste and will not make any difference in the appearance of your home when the whole idea is to improve!

It used to be very difficult years ago to do price comparisons and find the best deals on anything, but now with the advent of the internet shopping for the best price is literally at your fingertips with your mouse and keyboard. So what are you waiting for, start surfing.

I needed to have my whole house re done, ie…Flooring, Kitchen, Bathroom, etc. My question is…I always walk around Home Depot and see all the different samples. For the best price and quality, should I go to a place like Home Depot and Lowe's or should I find independent contractors( in the Yellow Pages) that specialize in certain jobs? I've never done anything like this before so I would definitely appreciate the advice. Thanks guys!

You will find many indispensable facts regarding costs of home improvement in the following paragraphs. Every one of these facts is likely to make a lot of difference if you are ignorant about them.

There is a lot more to know about the latest in home improvement costs if you have a basic understanding.

Costs of Home Improvement

Cost of home improvement can be astounding but if you follow a few simple guidelines, you will be able to curtail it and make a small fortune in saving. As far as home improvement is concerned, it is extremely important to make a budget as money will just slip through your fingers even when you feel the job is almost done. Remember that where materials are concerned, they probably justify their cost according to their quality. So if something is expensive, it will also be of very good quality. So you have to decide how much you want to spend on the materials. Don’t compromise on the quality of the material as there is always a possibility that cheaper materials will be available but their quality will not be just as good.

Budgeting is very important. You must always budget a little more than what you want to spend so if the costs do escalate, or you have to undertake some extra work that you had not thought about, then at least you are prepared with the money. If a budget is not made, you will not be able to keep a track of where the money is being spent. Small little expenditures have a way of building up unawares so make sure you do not exceed your budget with things like tiling or wallpaper which you have forgotten.

The way to curtail home improvement costs is to ensure that you actually buy only the things that you need. There is no sense in purchasing a thing that you will probably never use. It would be a waste of money and hence avoidable. Costing is an important factor in home improvement projects because you have to fit in the project according to the funds at your disposal. Of course, you do not get anything free but you can surely minimise the cost by a great deal of budgeting.

The basic idea of home improvement is to make it the way you want and a comfortable place for you and your family. As such, whether or not you get the most expensive bath suite or the most expensive carpet is quite immaterial. What is important is that you and your family enjoy the outcome of the home improvement and live in it happily.

That is one aspect of home improvement costs. Of course there are many more levels to it as far as you want to go.

While it is true that the easiest way to get a new house is simply to buy one, it is also true that this is not the only way to create the feeling of living in a new home. There are many home improvement options available to home owners in Australia. Home improvement is a process that encompasses many potential actions and is something that will allow you to beautify your existing property. As such, home improvement will allow you to actively engage in a design process that will be very rewarding. Quality home improvement, be it on a small scale or a larger scale, will also cause the value of your property to increase. In the long run, this will result in a significant increase in profits for you in terms of resale value potential as well as rental amount potential. In short, if you have some time on your hands, get thinking about some home improvement projects that you can engage in yourself. As you begin to see how much of an effect even the smallest change makes, you will automatically start thinking about potential improvements that you can make on a larger scale. One such large scale home improvement possibility is a home extension. A home extension will give your property an entirely different vibe. A home extension can be used to create an additional room, a dedicated space for a particular recreational activity, storage space, or simply to make your house look bigger and roomier.

Extension Builders Pty Ltd is an Australian company that has garnered a solid reputation as one of Australia’s leading home renovation and extension experts. Extension Builders can help you to design and construct a vast number of extension related projects that will help to improve and add value to your home. For more information, please visit the company web-site at www.extension.com.au

Global Home Improvement Clean and Professional Approach to Quality Home Improvements
Help answer the question about Quality Home Improvement
I had a home improvement contractor did poor workmanship and poor quality materials. Should I sue him?
It been a year since the contract been signed and most of the work done. I gave him 26,000 for upgrades in my home. I got a new 12 x 6 deck, three counter tops cultured marble laminate counter tops, laminant counter top for kitchen a new front door, an air condition, and water heater. In addtion plumbling fixture and sink for the kitchen. The contract written new and replace the old. He tries to justify why he used cheap materials. My deck falling apart wood and inside was built poor workmanship. I filed a complaint with local b.b.b. ans it s been six month nothing done to fix or replace issues. I requested receipts or itemized list. Nothing . The contractor still refuses to replace deck . Only a few boards. He says I should go after the subcontrator. The subcontracotr has not called . After getting estimates other companys , it will cost 10,000 to fix. He says he can do a insurance claim, but have no money. 10,000 unaccounted for and now he says his busniess closed to give me money.
I was told it would cost more money to get a lawyer, because the work was 26,000. I guess I can say I got ripped off.

Scheduled to be released in summer 2006, Blu-ray high-definition DVD players from Pioneer, Panasonic and Samsung set forth to conquer the world of video. Though initial models that were estimated at selling between $1000 and $1800 were deemed pricey, that did not last long as competition from HD-DVD and more manufacturers geared up.

HDTV sets with the newer, potentially sharper, 1080p resolution were on their heels, coming out over the same time frame. And sales of the players were predicted to help drive those of the sets and vice-versa.

Technical side notes, before launching into the first of our product reviews: the amount 720 or 1080 represents the number of horizontal lines of pixels, with the larger number corresponding to 1920 x 1080 resolution. The letter ‘p’ or ‘i’ stands for progressive and interlaced, respectively. Interlacing ‘paints’ the screen in two passes, one for even lines another for odd, progressive does so in a single pass.

Overall picture quality is determined by several things, not just the total number of lines or pixels. Interlaced projection has to paint the lines in such a way as to fool the eye to avoid flicker. That depends on frame rates, which also come in a variety. Differing frame rates and projection methods introduce the need to convert signals. How, and how well, that conversion is done has a large effect on the perceived picture quality.

Blu-ray DVD uses a blue light laser to illuminate the pits found in any DVD disc (now known as BD discs). Blue light has a shorter wavelength, allowing the pits to be spaced closer together, so more information can be packed into the same space.

One of the advantages of the new Blu-ray players is their ability to output a 1080p signal via the HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) jack. HD-DVD models are capable only of 1080i resolution. Most current sets convert the signal anyway, though, so you won’t see any difference. But newer, 1080p native resolution sets will become common in HDTV over the years.

Pioneer BDP-HD1

Pioneer’s foray into the HD player market will offer some features not found on the Samsung. The BDP-HD1 is expected to make use of their proprietary Home Media Gallery software that allows viewers to display digital photos, listen to music or watch movies all stored on the home computer.

All that content can be displayed in 1080p, but of course this is useless unless the source material has sufficiently good resolution to take advantage of it.

Pioneer makes excellent quality consumer electronics goods (their CD changer is the best on the market) and has for decades. Their HDTV models are highly rated and consumers can expect a reliable, well-performing unit.

But those features and that quality will come with a stiff price tag. The BDP-HD1 was slated to premier for $1,800.

There are many more models out in the marketplace today. So before you rush out to tackle your home improvements with a home entertainment center, check out more of our reviews to see which products would work best for you.
